PARQUET COATINGS: HOW TO CHOOSE THE MOST SUITABLE ONE
2 October 2019 by Fabio Piras in News

It is very difficult resisting a warm wooden floor charm.  However, due to continuous trampling , parquet wood substrates requires adequate protection.  Just for this reason it is necessary to choose carefully  the most suitable coating system suitable for parquet.

How to choose the most suitable parquet coating

varnish for parquet, varnish parquet, wood finish, parquet oil, two-component varnish

What factors need to be evaluated before choosing the proper coating system  for parquet?

In general it is necessary to evaluate the intended use of the final substrate and how much it will be used. Furthermore, it is essential to foresee the environmental conditions to which the wood will be subjected, and therefore make a strong distinction among  coatings for interior and coatings for exterior. Last but not least, we must not forget aesthetic appearance and evaluate whether we need  to use a particular color on the wood or enhancing  its natural appearance by using a clear coating instead.

For example, a polyurethane parquet coating, usually with high chemical-physical resistance, is more suitable for surfaces subjected to a continuous  foot traffic, such as public facilities or shops.

Oil-based coating is easy to apply; it  reinforces and revives wood colour in a natural shade.  It is a  suitable alternative that works in a different way than traditional coatings: it dries very slowly without forming a real paint film but impregnating wood pores instead. This mechanism allows to preserve the aesthetical  wood features  in order to maintain its natural colour.

Moreover, possibility of repeating wood treatment  by using the same product when necessary  makes the oil treatment an easy and versatile solution. Oils it is given a natural appearance, nowadays quite  appreciated in coating, as a difference to the past when vitrifying agents were used  in order to achieve a high gloss appearance on parquet flooring.

Methods and advises for parquet coating systems

parquet paint, wood paints, how to paint wooden floors, wood pores

When you need to paint big surfaces indoor without a proper air extraction system , such as wooden flooring already installed inside home, the use of solvent-based products can cause unpleasant consequences. Water-based paints preserve operators ‘ health and eliminate the persistence of pungent smell  for several days.

Wood flooring coatings made by sayerlack

Thanks to a matchless versatility, Sayerlack products meet all types of purposes, from professional user  to the DIY lover.

Hydroplus parquet products are easy to use. Being a one-component they are ready to use: ideal for brush, roller and spray application. Maintenance operations are simpler and can be carried out with the same product.

Water-based adhesion primer – RUS2716/00

To be applied by roller on bare  wood or painted with series AC0600/XX, XM8000/XX or XM8100/XX colors for in-line coating with UV systems. It gives the substrate  a good paint adhesion for coats that will be applied later.

UV acrylic filler – RU7512

Equipped with excellent transparency and viscosity stability during in-line application. Suitable for carrying out closed pore coating systems on wood with deep pore like oak. It has high flowing power and could  be easily manually sanded.

Acrylic UV topcoat – Series RZ31**

Expressly designed for parquet flooring coating system applied by roller coater. They have excellent final gloss evenness, excellent hardness and good scratch resistance.

UV topcoat – Series RZ89**

This kind  of topcoat is sutable for parquet flooring with excellent aesthetic performances,  excellent surface hardness and good abrasion resistance. They have an excellent spreading rate even with low quantities applied.

Water-based two-component transparent self-sealer – series AF60**/A0

The AF60**/A0 self-sealer are products whose the main component , the resin, is hazardous substances free such as NMP (methyl pyrrolidone) and NEP (ethyl pyrrolidone).

This drastically reduces product and does not report any hazardous pictograms in SDS.

vernice per parquet, vernici sayerlack per legno da interni, vernici all'acqua per parquetThe main component resin contains a large part of raw material coming from bio-renewable sources: this means that the painting of the already laid flooring, new or restored one, no longer considers o the technical performancem only, but more and more also the environmental one and painters’ health, now a fundamental topic.

The results of the analysis commissioned to an independent laboratory in order to verify the content of renewable material within the new formulation of AF60**/A0 declares that, according to the ASTM D6866 standard, each available gloss of the finished product contains at least a quarter of the total formulation , excluding water.

Thanks to a suitable choice of performing raw materials and to the specific formulation AF60**/A0 it shows high chemical resistance complying with UNI EN 13442 standard and high physical resistance such as abrasion resistance according to UNI EN 15185 and scratch resistance according to UNI EN 15186. Excellent water resistance, cross cut, air-realeasing features and dirt retention.

Available in 5, 20, 30, 50 gloss, AF60**/A0 versions can be applied by roller, brush or spray on bare or pre-treated substrates made of softwood, hardwood and exotic ones . Also the new version continues to be hardened with 10% by weight of AH1547/00 . AF60 **/A0 can be tinted with water-based pigmented pastes XA2006/XX.

Water-based one-component transparent self-sealer – series AF63**/00

Very versatile, applicable by spray, brush and roller. It also does not report any warning or hazardous pictograms in SDS.

Wood oil – OL3000/00

OL3000/00 wood oil is dedicated to the interior and exterior parquet flooring sector . It can be applied by roller, spray, brush and rag, it has excellent chemical-physical resistance, viscosity, good drying speed. In  case of exterior parquet treatment, generally , a yearly maintenance will be required. Pigmentable with XEL3609/XX and XE4150/XX pastes.

Waterbased oil wax effect – AOV2343/00

This parquet oil can be used for indoor furniture and parquet flooring  treatment. AOV2343/00 is a waterbased oil with natural perfume of beeswax which gives a soft, natural and wax appearance to the treated surfaces.

As seen with solvent-based oils, maintenance will be required, the frequency of which will depend on the wear degree  to which the product will be subjected. AOV2343/00 is hardened with 5%  by weight of AH1564/00: if hardened,  product will be able to achieve  greater adhesion and chemical resistance, while maintaining a long pot-life. AOV2343/00 can be pigmented with the dyes and / or pigments of the AC2110/XX, AC0600/XX, AC1810/XX, XA2006/XX and XA4034/XX series.
