POLYURETHANE COATINGS FOR WOOD: WHAT IS IT AND WHAT IS USED FOR
18 September 2019 by Fabio Piras in News

polyurethane coating for wood, poly clear coat

Polyurethane coatings for wood are classified into two categories, one-component and two-component.

A one-component polyurethane coating consists of a single product ready to use; the two-component coating involves mixing two different products together. Specifically, a hardener and a resin solution.

Two-component polyurethane coatings offer better results that single-component ones. In fact they can guarantee a greater resistance to abrasion and chemical agents, high durability, a higher conservation of the coating film.

This choice on one-component polyurethane is mainly due to their simplicity of use, since it is not necessary to mix the monocomponent polyurethane coating.

When and how to apply polyurethane coating on wood

oil-based polyurethane, water-based polyurethane, polyurethane clear coat for wood and furniture

Using polyurethane coatings gives wood surfaces a special level of finish that cannot be overtaken by nitro one-pack coatings in terms of surface hardness, chemical resistance and mechanical resistance.

the two-component polyurethane coatings are more resistant to atmospheric agents, greater surface hardness, able to guarantee better adhesion on the substrate. Because of these characteristics, they are the most used for wood treatment. In order to guarantee greater resistance, it is possible to use polyurethane coatings for parquet.

Polyurethane coatings are particularly versatile products that can be applied with a whole range of different coating systems:

  • Spray gun
  • Curtain coating
  • Airless
  • Electrostatic and automatic systems

Regardless of the kind product chosen and where they are applied, in order to accomplish a good result, you should consider two factors:

Surface area to paint and application method that will be used for apply it.

If a two-component polyurethane coating is chosen, the kind of hardener and thinner to be used must also be chosen.

Mineral spirits are not suitable thinners for polyurethane coating.

It will be possible to use the classic brush, which could become a forced choice in case of restoration, retouching or simple work on small surfaces that require attention to detail.

Anyway this are advanced products that are suitable for professional wood finishing on furniture and those are most commonly used for coating frames, cabinet doors, joinery, wood flooring and kitchen doors.

Polyurethane coatings for wood made by Sayerlack

The wide range of Sayerlack polyurethane base coats and top coats caters for all purposes of furniture coating with excellent aesthetic results, mechanical strength, chemical resistance, quick drying properties and extremely short working times.

Sayerlack polyurethane coatings for wood are two-pack products: one base part and one hardener, designed to be mixed in given amounts immediately prior to use and then cure by chemical reaction.

Clear polyurethane base coat for general purpose – TU0001/00

It is extremely versatile and suitable for most applications. In particular it has good sandability, good build and excellent lifting resistance. TU0001/00 can be applied using airmix or airless spray guns or curtain coater.

Area of use: flat parts, fitted furniture, solid wooden parts, doors.

Method of use: spray gun and curtain coater.

Polyurethane clear coat basecoat – TU0161/00

The TU0161/00 is a polyurethane clear coat recommended for doors and fitted furniture. It exhibits high filling properties and vertical hold, good sandability and excellent lifting resistance.

Area of use: fitted furniture, doors, profiles.

Method of use: airmix and airless spray gun.

Clear polyurethane topcoat – TZ28**/00 Series

The series TZ28**/00 is an extremely versatile matt for top coating and is used for any kind of spray applications, including airmix, airless, oscillating spray guns and fixed spray guns for profiles. It is suitable for both horizontal and vertical applications.

Its high solids content makes it more suitable for conventional or forced air drying with drying times of at least 2 hours, and less suitable for very short tunnel drying. TZ28**/00 always ensures an even matting as well as a smooth and very hard surface.

Area of use: flat parts, doors, profiles, turned parts.

Method of use: conventional and airless spray guns, curtain coater.

Clear matt polyurethane topcoat – TZ62**/00 Series

TZ62**/00 is a series of clear matt with good pore filling capacity and a hard smooth film surface. It is particularly suitable for forced drying systems with hot air, thanks to its good speed of solvent release and high drying speed. It gives excellent results with open pore systems.

Obviously a proper choice of the right grit sanding paper is mandatory. TZ62**/00 is suitable for surfaces subject to particular wear and tear conditions (table tops, office furniture) where the highest surface hardness is required.

Area of use: kitchen doors, flat parts of furniture subject to wear and tear conditions.

Method of use: spray gun.

Two-component opaque pigmented – TU0218/XX Series

The TU0218/XX is a series of incredible two-component opaque pigmented self-sealer with exceptional weather-resistance and versatility, wherever it’s used. For coating wooden doors and door and window frames, garden furniture and products exposed to the elements.

TU0218/XX shows incredible performance in its resistance to bad weather, extremes of temperature, UV rays and chemical attack, as well as lasting extremely well, all over the world. Tests carried out by Sayerlack or tests commissioned to specialized institutes reveal that even in the most aggressive seaside and mountain environments the TU0218/XX film does not deteriorate or crack.

A big solution to apply to hard and soft woods, and on exterior MDF, for coatings systems with impressive performance. Suitable for spray coating, horizontal or vertical, with any equipment, including electrostatic systems. Easy to apply, it does not raise the wood fiber and is unaffected by temperature or moisture related issued.

Vivid colours, excellent spreading rate and optimum coverage mean that TU0218/XX is one of a kind. TU0218/XX is available white /13 and white converter /BB. To produce colours add pigment using TP2009/XX pastes of Wood Color Plus tintometric system.
